Castiglione del Lago

It extends in the western part of Umbria , bordering the province of Siena and Arezzo . Its territory includes most of Lake Trasimeno and the island Polvese . Castiglione del lago was built on a limestone outcrop that was originally the fourth island of the lake but , following a drop in the water level and the emergence of an alluvial plain , finally assumed the current configuration . This fertile plain area , corresponding to the ancient of the lakes , is bordered on the west by a series of hills that mark the physical border with Tuscany . The modern Castiglione has developed in the flat area to the west from the medieval old town
